Project Description
The Government, Public Diplomatic and Commercial Buildings including Hospitals and Educational Institutes in Islamabad Capital are either centrally air-conditioned or using window or split type air-conditioners. The central air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are being operated on natural gas for space heating & cooling or diesel oil and electricity.

During load shedding of electricity, diesel oil or natural gas based electric generators have been installed, as a standby arrangement, in all the buildings. For space heating during winter season, these buildings also use natural gas operated water boilers, electrical heaters or direct fired gas heaters. These buildings consume large quantities of natural gas, diesel oil and electricity for air-conditioning, heating, cooling and supply of hot water. Besides consumption of diesel oil & natural gas in stand by generators the electricity in Pakistan is also being mostly generated by thermal power plants using natural gas or oil. Therefore, these Air conditioned units are consuming huge quantities of natural gas and oil directly or indirectly. Moreover these plants are adding thousands of tons of Green-House Gas emissions every day in the environment and contributing in the Climate Change and Global Warming. Due to high consumption of natural gas for space heating & hot water in the winter season, the gas supplies to industries are usually cutoff resulting in their closure which is a huge economic loss to the country besides creating unemployment, increasing poverty & unrest among the labor who often Resort to violence.

The use of clean geothermal energy for air-conditioning heating and cooling of buildings through Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHP) or Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) can save 100% natural gas and oil more than 50% electricity. It has been estimated by Energy Foundation Pakistan that one large hospital in Islamabad consumes/ wastes 6 BCF of natural gas every year in the air conditioned plants. Moreover these fossil fuels based air conditioning (HAVC) plants wasting millions of gallons of water in the Cooling Towers which is part of technology. The same water could be saved & used for drinking by using geothermal energy air conditioned systems. The supply of hot water is free in the system. According to United States Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Agency, Geothermal Heat Pumps are most energy efficient, environmentally friendly, clean and cost effective systems in the world. The single system provides heating, cooling and hot water with 40 years of life span. Moreover Islamabad city is facing serious shortages of drinking water which can be made available by replacing the gas oil fired HVAC. Plants, which consume lot of water every day in the cooling towers.

Project Objectives
Energy Foundation has proposed to start survey for eleminating natural gas & oil in all the Government, Public & commercial buildings to evaluate the quantity of natural gas, oil, electricity & water being consumed in the conventional air-conditioning systems. Moreover, the total Green-House Gas emissions generated from the existing air-conditioning systems will be estimated which could be produced by using clean geothermal energy.

Energy Foundation will estimate how much natural gas & oil could be saved annually through using geothermal energy which could otherwise be diverted to industries & transport sector. Moreover 50 % electricity and 100 % water can also be saved things use of geothermal energy heat pumps in the HVAC plants.

Consequently Green House Gas (GHG) emissions will be reduced after the installation of Geothermal Heat Pumps which will greatly help to convert Islamabad a Green City. Moreover millions of Rupees will be saved annually being wasted on using natural gas, oil and water in the conventional air conditioned systems by every organization.

Recommendations will be submitted to the relevant Authorities for implementation. Later on this survey will be undertaken in other big cities like Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, Abbotabad, Hyderabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot to estimate the savings of natural gas, oil & water through use of geothermal energy for air conditioning systems. It is roughly estimated that 10% natural gas of the total consumption in the country could be saved by using Geothermal energy for cooling, heating & supply of hot water.
